About: About

Kate Van Akin

I am an experienced coach, facilitator, and change expert. Passionate about helping others live fuller, more authentic lives, I coach individuals and teams and also lead workshops on topics related to leadership, finding meaning, and navigating difficult situations, working specifically with senior and mid-tenure business professionals at large corporations.

I previously spent ten years as a Senior Expert at McKinsey & Company, partnering with leaders in multi-national corporations on all aspects of engaging employees in change, including crafting compelling change stories, designing holistic change programs, and building change leadership capabilities. I have a law degree from Harvard Law School, where I focused on negotiation and mediation.

I was born and raised in the United States, and for the first 18 years of my life, I thought it was the greatest country in the world (that's the narrative there, at any rate!). When I started travelling to other countries, I was amazed to discover the richness and diversity of life beyond our borders. I left home when I was 22 and have since visited 55 countries. I have lived in Jordan, Dubai, and now London, and I consider myself a long-term expat. While there are many things to love about the U.S., there is also a lot to love about other places in this world as well.

Given how far I've travelled from home, I have reflected quite a bit on Dorothy's conclusion in The Wizard of Oz that "there's no place like home." What is home to someone who feels very little connection to her place of birth? Is it a place, is it relationships, is it a state of being?

These are the questions I hope to explore in Ruby Slippers.
